Will I be Orange?
At Bronze Effects we have specialized in Sunless Tanning for over 8 years. We eat, breathe and live sunless tanning. We would never offer a sunless solution that would make our clients orange, or apply a solution to make you appear that way. We go above and beyond to make sure that we offer some of the best brands and colors on the market today. The orange hue or illusion in sunless tanning is given by having someone apply a solution too dark for your skin tone or by applying the solution too heavily. It can also be from a cheap product/color or by applying an over the counter tanning product on top of your professional grade solution (we have seen this with Jergens users). When in doubt request a Violet base solution. Your technician should be able to explain this color theory and if not, please look elsewhere to get your sunless tan. There are too many people being certified these days by just listening to a 3 hour recording (yep, you read that correctly) without enough hands on experience or knowledge of the sunless industry. Again...we live for Sunless Tanning here at B.E. You will NOT be orange.
What is your price range and why?
Bronze Effects offers a variety of Sunless Tanning brands and colors to suit all of our clients needs. Our prices range from $25-$40 based on quality, color and convenience. Most salons will carry a "one brand fits all or a one color fits all". This is not realistic. Not every solution line will suit every type of skin or skin tone. This is very important when choosing where your sunless experience will be from. We offer over 12 colors of solution from 5 amazing brands. We also offer green, violet and red based solutions with the option of a quick rinse "rapid tan" to rinse in as little as 2 hours after your application for your convenience. The higher the price the higher the quality, the longer lasting lifespan of the tan, the deeper the color, the more beneficial to the skin (ingredients) and an even fade experience. We do offer unlimited packages to give our regulars and loyal clients a more affordable way to maintain their sunless tan.
How do I know which color/product is best for me and how long will it last?
Again, here at Bronze Effects, we specialize in sunless tanning. We will consult you prior to your service and customize the best option for you and all of your needs. As for how long your sunless tan will last depends on the quality of the brand chosen and the way you maintain your tan post application. While our basic solution may only last 4-6 days, most of our higher quality solutions last anywhere between 7-14 days and no we are not exaggerating on the 14 days. Some clients do get almost 2 weeks of wear before they are back for another sunless application.
We do carry the Norvell brand (minimal colors and not Organic) for those familiar with the brand. It is our $25 option (about $15 cheaper than most local salons offering the brand). We see nothing wrong with the brand, but we have experienced a much better response to our other brands over the years. We just love Australian products! They tend to have a much better quality of ingredients with many more benefits all around. Our clients experience is what is most important to us.
How do I prep for my sunless tan and what do I wear ?
The basics for a sunless tan prep are to exfoliate (meaning to use a loofa and scrub which helps remove any dry dead skin) and shave within 24-48 hours prior to your sunless tan (shaving closer to the apt time can leave you with darker pores in your skin). You will want to be free of any jewelry, lotions, perfumes and makeup for best results. You can always remove your makeup here in the studio if you are coming from work. You can bring a pair of flip flops or use ours here to keep the bottom of your feet from being colored. We carry medical grade tanning cleaner, so you can feel comfortable using our sandals. What you wear during the application is completely up to you and what you are comfortable in. We do this all day, every day and we are professionals. Our job is to make our clients feel comfortable and we would never pass judgment on a clients body type or discuss them after an apt. You will always see Melissa or Amanda, so you will be familiar with who is applying your sunless tan at all times. We'd say about 90% of our clients (women) go topless with just bottoms on (thong or underwear), about 10% go nude. If you are not comfortable with those options you may wear a bathing suit or a tank and shorts. Men must wear bottoms. Please remember whatever you do wear, you will want to be dark in color and maybe something you do not care to get solution on. It does not stain but if you wear it multiple times it can. After the solution is applied you will want to wear dark loose fitting clothes until you rinse anywhere between 2 hours - 12 hours later depending which solution option you have chosen.
What do I do post tan? How do I maintain?
To maintain your tan and keep the color from fading, you will want to leave it on the full time recommended by your technician before your first shower. Do not worry if you have brown lines in your skin creases, or you have a diamond shaped mark on your elbow bends, or if you feel like you are too dark, this is all normal. The sunless tanning solution always darkens while processing but barely ever stays this way once you rinse. Your skin will only tan as dark as it allows. If you happen to get water on you early, we highly recommend to still wait until after your initial rinse to see if you need to come in for a touch up apt. Usually the tan will still blend because it has already processed some before you got wet. Your first shower should usually be kept to a warm water rinse with using soap only in places necessary. This allows certain solutions to continue developing even after your initial rinse. You will see all the cosmetic bronzers wash off in the shower. This is also normal. For those of you who have chosen a rapid tan with a quick rinse, you will have barely any color at rinse time. Only a tint of color. Do not worry, this is perfectly normal. The color will continue to process and deepen as the next 12-24 hours goes on. The more hydrated you are the longer lasting tan you will have. This keeps the skin from drying out and from shedding the top layer of your skin which is where your tan color lies. Also, using a good hydrating lotion that does not contain alcohol in it. Alcohol will fade you quicker just like bar soaps. We are not saying you have to use a sunless tanning extender lotion from our studio (which keeps your tan from fading and lasting longer than normal), but just be smart about what you are applying over your tan and to your skin. Quality products always work and always pat dry after your shower. This is about it.
Sunless Tanning FAQ
Here at Bronze Effects, just because we specialize in Sunless Tanning, does not mean our clients do. We have applied some of the most frequently asked questions and answers (without overdoing it) below to give you a better idea of what to expect at your first sunless appointment in our studio. We see and hear of too may bad experiences from new clients these days, so we will give our most honest opinion and the best information we can to prove to you why we are one of your best local options for sunless tanning. Love Bronze.
Okay so we may be a bit biased since we are a hand held spray tanning business, but these are just some of our personal opinions for those contemplating which sunless application is better for them. For those clients who are not comfortable being in minimal clothing in front of a stranger, then the booth would be a great option for you. Other than that, I do not see the point of a booth spray tan. I dont care what "new" technology booth is out there or how it works, a booth cannot customize your color (mixing colors, etc) or your application to suit your skins needs or your personal preferences. Most booths offer one brand, which again (as mentioned above) is not realistic for everyone's skin type. I mean sure a booth can spray more than one brand, but odds are the salon is only using the brand the booth is made by. In my opinion the booth is an easy option for salons who do not want to specialize in sunless tanning or learn the in's and out's of the handheld sunless application process. The lazy man's "get rich" spray tan option for their clients. I mean sure, charge the same amount as a hand held custom application for 3/4 of the work and the odds are about 50% of your clients are not going to be happy with the outcome. Being a handheld artist, we have clients who have certain areas of the body that need specific attention. For example, is the booth going to stop directly at the wrist when spraying the arms to hands or legs to feet? Is the booth going to be able to add extra coats of solution to the clients hard to tan areas? What about those clients who do not want the solution on their face because it makes them break out? Or what about the client who likes her face extra dark because it is the first thing to fade because of our daily cleansing habits? Or the client who likes their feet lightly sprayed to avoid them looking fake tan or dirty? Can the booth darken the sides of the clients body to contour and slim down certain body types or mask cellulite? Can the booth contour fitness pros? I guess I just do not see how a booth spray tan can even compare to a hand held spray tan experience. I am not saying that all booth spray solutions or spray tans are terrible (some can actually be better than some of the technicians out there these days), but it definitely will look just like anyone elses "booth spray tan". It is not custom to you or your skin's needs to give you the most natural looking tan. Please just cross your fingers when you step in the booth and hope that you are one of the 50% that will not have any issues. And to think..to pay the the same price, if not more, as a hand held professional application by a specialty technician with proper knowledge in some locations? Think about it...Hope this helps.
Cons of the booth (borrowed off another friendly technician's blog that we are acquainted with in N.Y.)
* No trained technician customizing your tan experience
* All bodies are not made the same, so even coverage is not guaranteed
* 2 light coats of tanning solution provides a better tan - most booths only do 1 heavier coat
* A trained technician should be able to choose the best shade for you, while you will most likely have to choose your own
